Ways To Be Noticed As A Sports Content Creator
In this digital age, anything is possible if you just put your mind to it. It’s not as easy as anyone would think, especially if you’re a sports content creator. You need to have a wide knowledge of sports and in-depth information about what sport you choose to pursue.
Here’s a list of effective ways to get noticed as a sports content creator:
1. Post Your Work
This is the most obvious element in getting noticed as a sports content creator or any creator in general. The easiest way to get noticed is to post your work on social media ‘cause it’s the best way for people to find you, see what you’re good at, and hire you. In addition, if you want big brands to spot what you’ve been creating, you have to share it with the world.
Moreover, if it’s not your best work, just post it still. You don’t know what particular piece/video might resonate with somebody or with a brand and might reach out to you for a job. If you’re not sharing your work, then why would anyone going to take notice of you?
Let me also tell you that it’s not gonna happen right away. It’s like a slow-burn romance movie in the 80s where you really have to focus and be patient because later on, the climax will occur and the few details at the start are gonna be the big plot twist.
2. Experiment
Learning is endless that’s why as a content creator in sports, you have to try different things and figure out what you want to do with your future content. Try new trends, a different concept, a new editing style, ‘cause as you progress, you’ll find your own voice and pin it as your aesthetic as a content creator. Don’t be a one-trick pony. If you’re tired of filming using a hand camera then try using a drone to capture events or shoot a place for a sports competition. If your video content always starts with a zoomed-in shot of a person playing basketball, then try a different routine, do an intro with yourself talking to your viewers then an outro at the end.
In relation to that, some creators are clipping their wings because the idea of failing is not desirable for them. But great opportunities happen when you experiment, did you know that? Don’t be afraid to start up, start over, or even fail for that matter, because the fact that you try new things in itself is a victory.
3. Create A Shot List
If you want to make amazing sports video content, you must create a shot list. It’s like a to-do list that’s beneficial for everyone to be on the same track even if you have a large crew or just solo. The reason why it’s here in this article is because oftentimes, you’ll get lost during a shoot especially if you have multiple settings or in a huge sports event, and we don’t want that. Yes, you’ll get noticed but it’ll be because of a failed attempt to capture the highlight of a game or a busted equipment while on set.
Moreover, a shot list is crucial because it’s the blueprint for your project/content. It keeps you and everyone around you on track. Here are a few things to put in your shot list (you can add more if you want to) :
- Setup - add a new setup when you reposition your camera angle or change lighting setups.
- Shot - increase the shot number by one every time you begin a different shot.
- Equipment - list the tools that support the camera (e.g. Tripod, Steadicam, dolly, drone, etc.)
- Movement - explain what your camera movement is (e.g. Pan, Zoom, Dolly, Static, Tilt, etc.)
- Angle - describe the angle of the camera that’s focusing on a subject (e.g. eye level, high angle, low angle, etc.)
4. Put Yourself On The Internet
In relevance to the top of this list on ways to get noticed, if you post your work on the web, make sure that you put yourself in it too. I don’t just mean you talking to the camera and whatnot but also your creativity as a content creator and your attitude toward your final output. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there, you should talk to the camera and engage with your viewers. Famous brands might want to work with you because they saw your videos and noticed how you manage your content as a sports creator.
5. Be Good At Networking
Networking with people is a valuable skill to perfect. At the end of the day, even if you’re this talented creator or videographer but you don’t know how to connect with people then they will never notice you. You should let them know what you’re all about and show them what your value is as a person and as a professional.
In addition, a lot of opportunities were found in networking, you just have to be comfortable with it. Make sure you’re out there talking to people, it’s a great way to gather ideas too. Use X (formerly known as Twitter) or LinkedIn since it’s a great space to network with people.
It’s not going to be an easy ride for you, especially if you just started your career as a sports content creator. Just be nice to everybody and don’t burn any bridges. Make sure that you don’t put too much pressure on yourself ‘cause these things don’t happen overnight. Enjoy the journey and not aim for the destination.
